Subtitle finishing: check offsets, line wrapping and review flags

A practical sequence you can use with your existing files and team.

Once subtitles already exist, finishing them is a separate job from transcribing or translating. Work from a copy of the source file and inspect the result with the actual video before delivery.

Distinguish a constant offset from drift

If every cue is early or late by the same amount, a constant offset can move the batch. A positive offset moves captions later; a negative offset moves them earlier. If the mismatch grows during the video, a single offset will not correct it. Review the source timing instead.

Check the beginning and the end

After shifting, inspect cues near time zero and near the end of the video. ClipCaption stops if a negative offset removes a cue before zero, rather than silently discarding it. Review overlaps as well: they are flagged, not automatically repaired.

Wrap lines and inspect difficult words

A line-width setting helps produce consistent breaks, but it cannot decide every editorial choice. Long unbroken words and more than two resulting lines deserve a manual check. ClipCaption allows a width from 16 to 80 characters.

Treat reading speed as a review signal

The report flags cues above 22 characters per second. That is the tool’s review threshold, not a universal delivery standard. Check the intended audience, video context and destination requirements when deciding whether to shorten or retime a cue.

Preserve features the format needs

SRT and basic VTT are supported. Positioned, regional and styled VTT are rejected to avoid silently losing their features. If those features matter to the project, keep them in the source workflow. Export both supported formats and retain the CSV review report with the final files. Play the video with the exported subtitles to make the final check.
